DESERT ARTISTS with Professor Liz Ashburn
Be nestled in the earth’s arms as you sleep under the stars...feel the connection to country…let it guide your artwork.
Into the Blue Creative Walks is a walking company with a difference. They seek to walk in wilderness and not just through it, allowing opportunities to experience nature and the journey in a more profound and enjoyable way.
Their programs combine workshops that meld into the narrative of the journey, allowing the landscape and story of the country to be more fully felt. Take your passion and combine it with Into the Blue: and the results are usually extraordinary.
In July this year, Liz Ashburn will again be leading a group on the DESERT ARTIST Walk. Each season sees the program delve further into the drama, emotional story, tragedy and beauty that is the Central Australian story.

Why on earth would you do anything so uncomfortable, exposed and difficult?
You are right out there 'feeling' the atmosphere. You cannot paint fussy if the wind is blowing 90 km per hour, you cannot paint fast if the air is full of moisture in a fog… you cannot be tentative if you are in a busy street… in other words you have to match the conditions of the day and develop some ‘new’ ways of working which can only be a bonus when back in the studio.

The use by artists of visual sketchbooks is a fundamental part of developing their art practice. Whether a novice or professional artist, the ability to document progress and to visually work through ideas is an important step in creating work that has a depth of meaning to the artist and its audience. The sketchbook can provide the blueprint to thematic consistency in a body artwork, or it can provide an irreplaceable document of a journey.

Colour and Light in Oils
Often seen as dark and gloomy, oils can, in fact, be used to create colourful and light paintings that are wonderfully expressive. One significant characteristic of oil paint is its richness and depth of colour, something that is of particular interest to Nicholas Verrall. Immediately striking in all his pictures is the skilful way he handles colour to interpret the special qualities of light and mood found in a certain moment in time.

The Oil Painting Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist
This reference to painting with oils compares leading brands of paints. It describes mediums, solvents and varnishes; illustrates brushes, pallettes and other tools; and shows both traditional and unconventional techniques.
